Flexible hinges in orthotropic cylindrical shells facilitated by nonlinear elastic deformations

چکیده

Flexible hinges enable the design of folding structures without using mechanisms by making use intrinsic structural characteristics in action folding. This technology introduces potential benefits including weight reduction, omission lubrication and potentially better system reliability. To achieve such technology, we exploit a well-known instability characteristic thin-walled under bending: Brazier effect. Composite materials play key role this problem since they critical load for to be tuned. Moreover, minimisation moment is material dependent, offering extra degrees freedom morphing purposes. The present work considers providing insights on its dependency. For purpose, an analytical solution cylindrical shells made unidirectional laminates empirical expression useful purposes, comprising 4-ply symmetric laminates, are presented with validation accomplished finite element analysis.

Localized and extended deformations of elastic shells.

The dried raisin, the crushed soda can, and the collapsed bicycle inner tube exemplify the nonlinear mechanical response of naturally curved elastic surfaces with different intrinsic curvatures to a variety of different external loads. To understand the formation and evolution of these features in a minimal setting, we consider a simple assay: the response of curved surfaces to point indentatio...

Indentation of ellipsoidal and cylindrical elastic shells.

Thin shells are found in nature at scales ranging from viruses to hens' eggs; the stiffness of such shells is essential for their function. We present the results of numerical simulations and theoretical analyses for the indentation of ellipsoidal and cylindrical elastic shells, considering both pressurized and unpressurized shells. We provide a theoretical foundation for the experimental findi...

Packing of elastic wires in flexible shells

The packing problem of long thin filaments that are injected into confined spaces is of fundamental interest for physicists and biologists alike. How linear threads pack and coil is well known only for the ideal case of rigid containers, though. Here, we force long elastic rods into flexible spatial confinement borne by an elastic shell to examine under which conditions recently acquired knowle...

Nonlinear Stochastic Dynamical Post-buckling Analysis of Uncertain Cylindrical Shells

This paper presents the nonlinear dynamical post-buckling analysis of an uncertain cylindrical shell. The proposed approach is adapted to the dynamical analysis of geometrically nonlinear structures subjected to a stochastic ground-based motion in the presence of both system parameter uncertainties and model uncertainties. The structure is modeled by a large finite element model using 3D elasti...

Third Order Formulation for Vibrating Non-Homogeneous Cylindrical Shells in Elastic Medium

Third order shear deformation theory of cylindrical shells is employed to investigate the vibration characteristics of non-homogeneous cylindrical shells surrounded by an elastic medium. The kinematic relations are obtained using the strain-displacement relations of Donnell shell theory. The shell properties are considered to be dependent on both position and thermal environment. A suitable fun...
